As many would agree generalization is a terrible problem that has plagued our society for hundreds of years. Yet, the same people seem to fail to realize when they are the ones generalizing. Which has become extremely apparent in the case of ‘Baby Yoda.’
The Child (Baby Yoda) is an infant who appears to be of the same unknown alien species as the widely known Star Wars character Yoda. Due to this he was immediately nicknamed ‘Baby Yoda’ after his appearance in the first episode of The Mandalorian without a second thought. The problem with this is that it’s a prime example of generalization and its effects. If someone was to start calling African American children Baby Michael Jordan it would be racist, right? Even so, his “fans” have ignored any attempts to stop the hatefulness being spread and have instead chosen to continue generalizing The Child’s race months after he first was revealed.
This generalization has resulted in The Child becoming the target of both 4chan users and MAGA supporters alike who both have the intent to turn him into a symbol of hate. With even Donald Trump Jr. engaging in the slander by posting a terribly Photoshopped image of The Child with Donald Trump’s face captioned, “THE MAGALORIAN.” Some users have gone as far as to photoshop The Child into a picture of a KKK meeting while others changed him into the known White supremacist character ‘Pepe the Frog.’
With it now being almost a year since the premiere of The Mandalorian and the 2nd season supposed to air in October of this year; I’m hopeful that many will realize their racism and stop referring to The Child as ‘Baby Yoda.’
